Mr & Mrs Havercroft contacted us regarding this project. They had already purchased the reclaimed blocks from another source but enquired to see if would price to install, sand and seal. We usually only install the materials that Timberwolf supplies, however it is always worth giving us a call, we may be able to offer a labour only quote dependent on our workload. Our price was accepted and we set about the task in hand. The floor was first over laid with 9mm exterior ply, to give a resilient base to install the blocks. Panelling had already been installed in this hallway area, therefore we agreed to undercut this panelling rather than removing the whole thing to allow the blocks to slide underneath, resulting in a neat finish. Occasionally in older properties such as this we carry out careful undercut work rather than removing the very tall, old style skirting or panelling, these usually consist of multiple sections and can be costly to replace. We take great care when carrying this out as more often than not, either pipes or wires (or both) are concealed within this void – See photos with wires / pipes. The field blocks were installed first, a walnut feature strip added to the perimeter, then finally the border blocks. It made a nice change to install a traditional border such as this. More recently the trend is for herringbone to be laid without a border, and less and less with blocks of this smaller size. Oversize parquet (450x90mm) or Timberwolf’s own ‘Giant Parquet’ (595mmx155mm) being the more popular supply & fit option. These blocks are installed taking the herringbone pattern right to the perimeter / skirting. This method is actually more time-consuming to undertake, hence the reason it was nice to install a border this time round. As the photo of the blocks installed prior to sanding shows – these guys needed some work!! Once again our heavy duty machinery made short work of this, the blocks were polished to a fine finish with the rotary machines. Mass filling was carried out, in between sanding the process, resulting in a clean, smooth finish. We use a slightly different prime solution for reclaimed blocks, to prevent any bleed through from old finish left on the edges of the blocks, then sealed as usual with 3 coats of water based lacquer.
