Oak Parquet Floor Sanding

GO BACK

This beautiful original parquet block floor was possibly one of the oldest local floors, that Timberwolf has had the pleasure of renovating. The oak block floor was originally laid in this stunning 19th Century coaching house circa 1900. The Grand looking central hallway is a favourite ‘play area’ for our clients grandchildren, as well as being the main reception area used for hosting many open garden events. Consequently the floor continues to take considerable daily wear & tear. Upon seeing the results by Timberwolf’s sanding service at his sons neighbouring property, our client was keen that his floor received the same treatment.

Once again the floor had been more recently restored using traditional lacquer / varnish, which had yellowed with age as is consistent with such finishes, however this floor was showing signs of heavy wear with considerable scratches caused by the children’s toys, bikes, skate-boards etc. !! We set about deep sanding the floor with one of our heavy duty belt sanding machines and removed all the old finish and scratch marks. This deep sanding then highlighted the fact that many years previously the wood block floor had become slightly loose, this had been remedied by nailing each and every block into the sub-floor below.

Whilst it is common practice to come across fine pins and headless panel pins in any block / parquet floor, this had been done with a rather ‘belt and braces’ approach using large regular floor board nails - 2 in each and every block ! After individually setting each and every nail with a hammer & punch (sore fingers task) we set about mass filling the whole area, and buffed the floor to fine finish. This disguised the appearance of the nails considerably.

Our Client was interested in one of our Oiled finishes, but chose a more traditional look ‘Hardwax oil’ over the more contemporary white oil favoured by his son. Once again the beauty of this Hardwax treatment being that this could be replenished with maintenance oil and wax as and when required. We generally recommend that such floors are professionally re-oiled by ourselves every 18-24 months dependent on the wear received.
